Charlotte's Web Pig
Charlotte's Web—the best-selling children's paperback of all time—was described by its author as "a story of friendship and salvation on a farm." If you've already read the book, you know about the friendship that grows between Wilbur, a runty pig, and Charlotte, a heroic spider. But you may not know that the book's author, E. B. White, was himself a friend to animals.

How Dudley saved his bacon
As flames engulfed a Beaver County farmhouse early Wednesday, the Karwoski family anxiously waited to learn what happened to Dudley. Firefighters found the family's 80-pound Vietnamese potbellied pig safe and sound, burrowed under a pile of sweatshirts in the garage along Church Road in rural Independence.

Steve the crocodile hunter is dead :(
The naturalist and television star Steve Irwin has died in a diving accident in far north Queensland. He was 44. Police say he was stung through the heart by a stingray while diving off Port Douglas. He was filming a documentary when the accident occurred around midday AEST near the Low Isles. A helicopter arrived with paramedics on board to try to resuscitate him, but it was too late. Cruise operator Steve Edmondson and his passengers watched on as paramedics tried to revive the television star. "We are obviously very saddened by the news. It's a very unusual incident. We're all big fans of Steve Irwin," he said.

Please meet Rosie & Gracie
Here are some pictures of my special girls. I bought these two little ones at a stockyard (I didn’t know any better).
The seller told me they were weaned and eating solid food. Not true! I had to bottle feed them for 3 weeks before they would eat soft solids, what a struggle for them and me! They are now healthy and such sweeties. Yes, I know Gracie need to go on a diet, I have cut back her food.
I only feed pig chow and occasionally watermelon rinds. No other treats! Gracie is shorter in both height and length than Rosie. Crissy & Ray [chandler6@chartertn.net]

Wilbur is free to be prosthetic-free
The Roanoke Times

This little piggy liked being a tripod.

Wilbur, a Tamworth pig, was 7 months old when he came to Harmony, an animal sanctuary in Botetourt County operated by the Roanoke nonprofit Angels of Assisi.

Steve George had worked at the New Castle farm where Wilbur lost one of his legs by getting caught in a fence. When George got a new job running Harmony, he brought the pig along.

When The Roanoke Times last wrote about Wilbur in April, the organization was working with Virginia Prosthetics to get him an artificial leg.

Rocky Mount woman gives pig a good life
By Evelio Contreras

The Roanoke Times

For as long as she can remember, Michelle Miller of Rocky Mount had always wanted a pot-bellied pig.

Nine years ago, when she was a senior in high school, she passed handwritten notes to her friends with little drawings of pigs on them.

Michael Miller, a friend at the time and now her husband, once promised Michelle in a note that he would get her one.

“I never believed him,” she said. “We lost touch until a few years ago, and he promised the pig and got me a pig.”
