Pet Pig - Tips for Horseback Riding

Horses are not really my cup of tea! Unfortunately, I want to be large animal vet and therefore the horse and I had to come to some agreement. So I went horseback riding at a farm in Northern Ontario. Here are some tips for getting over your fears of horses and riding into the wind!

1) Remember that if you can jump on the horse, you can easily jump right back off in case of an emergency!
2) The reins give you all the control as a rider over the horse. It is important to keep those reins loose otherwise you will not understand when your horse starts backing up.
3) Helmet is always a great idea!
4) To ease both your nerves and the horse, while you are riding don’t be scared to give him a little rub on the shoulders or the rump. You don’t need to reach very far, just go for the closest spot.
5) Rock your body to the rhythm of the horses; this prevents you from feeling like you are going to fall out of the saddle. It also helps your bottom after as well.
6) Before you jump right on the horse, take a few minutes to talk to it and calm your nerves.
7) Always keep your feet forward. This also helps with your balance and lessens the feeling of falling out of the saddle.
8) If you are riding in a group make sure your horse is a good distance away from other horse to prevent any kicking out that will startle both you and your horse.
9) Always spend time with the horse, brushing it down. It is comforting to both you and the horse if you get comfortable in each others presence and the horse becomes comfortable with its riders voice.
10) Remember it is always a good idea to ride with others. If case of injury to the horse or just someone to talk you out of your nervousness.
